Those that know us know how much we love things industrial. And Bologna is a city that loves industry. This has been a manufacturing centre since before the industrial revolution. It had started milling silk by the 12th century. What put Bologna in the lead was the technology of processing silk and energy supplied by one of the most advanced systems of water supply in the world. The city used to be full of canals but now most of them are underground, including one waterfall that is 10 metres high producing hydro-electric power! In the 17th century, it was famous for its silk mills.
In the 20th century, it has become famous for machine tools, food processing equipment, packaging equipment, fountain pens and, of course, design, design, design. Some of the famous names: Ducati, Minarelli, Lamborghini, Italjet, Malaguti, Morini, VM, Omas.
Today we visited the Museum of Industrial Heritage, just a 20-minute walk along the canal from our residence.
